Halloween: Misc. Ideas (1)

Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of
years. The holiday we know as Halloween has had many influences from many
cultures over the centuries. From the Roman’s Pomona Day, to the Celtic festival
of Samhain, to the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days.
Hundreds of years ago in what is now Great Britain and Northern France, lived
the Celts. The Celts worshipped nature and had many gods, with the sun god as
their favorite. It was “he” who commanded their work and their rest times, and
who made the earth beautiful and the crops grow.
The Celts celebrated their New Year on November 1st. It was celebrated every
year with a festival and marked the end of the “season of the sun” and the
beginning of “the season of darkness and cold.” The Celts believed, that during
the winter, the sun god was taken prisoner by Samhain, the Lord of the Dead and
Prince of Darkness.

Sensationally Spooky Halloween Ideas

Carve a pumpkin serving bowl by cutting the top off a medium-sized pumpkin in a
jagged design. Remove seeds and fleshy innards. Cut assorted veggies into
bite-size servings to fit in your smashing new pumpkin bowl.

Treat guests to individual, edible jack-o’-lanterns. Cut the tops off large
oranges and set them aside. Scoop out the centers, leaving a thick shell. Cut or
draw a jack-o’-lantern face on each orange. Pack chocolate ice cream into the
shells, and then gently set the orange tops back on. Put the oranges in the
freezer for at least 3 hours before serving.

Make a guest book out of brown paper bag pages. Your Halloween guests can sign
their names in vampire’s blood-red ink as they arrive.

Glue felt pieces onto your pumpkins to make eyes, noses, and mouths instead of
carving.

Light outdoor walkways and windowsills with luminaries. Take orange or black
paper bags and cut out Halloween designs with a hole puncher or stencil. Line
the bottoms with two inches of sand, push votive candles into the sand, and
light.

Witch’s Brew
Recipe By Sue Klapper

3 pints purple grape juice
1 1/2 pints club soda
grapes
apples

Mix the grape juice and soda in a pitcher. Halve the grapes
and take out the seeds. Cut the apple into small chunks. Float the fruit in the
brew just before serving; by magic, the grapes and apples will look just like
eyes and teeth.

Adult’s Witch’s Brew

36 ounces Unsweet apple juice concent - thaw, undiluted
5 cups Water
4 Vodka
1/2 cup Lime juice
1/2 gallon Lime sherbet - softened
8 cups Club soda - chilled

Combine apple juice, water, vodka, and lime juice in a large bowl. Cover and
chill. Just before serving, spoon sherbet
into a large punch bowl; slowly pour apple juice
mixture and club soda over sherbet, stirring gently.

If you have any bedroom doors ajar,
prop a skeleton up in bed with a pair of glasses & a book to read. Or, if you
decide to be really gruesome, buy some old sheets from the Salvation Army, lay
them out (OUTSIDE) & spatter them with any “blood” concoction of your choice,
that doesn’t stain!!! If it doesn’t stain anyone else when dry,
the bloody sheets can be used to cover (& protect!) your furniture. Just like in
an abandoned house
where a horrific butchering took place!! EEEK!

Make “grave” desserts. Use gray construction paper to cut out 4-6″ headstones.
Write the name of your guests on the headstones, along with a funny memorial to
each person. Make instant chocolate pudding and once set, put in individual
serving bowls. Then using a food processor, pulverize a package of chocolate
sandwich cookies. Process until the mixture resembles rich dirt. Sprinkle
liberally on top of each bowl of chocolate pudding. Decorate each with a
headstone before serving.

Make scarecrows. Stuff old jeans, flannel shirts, socks, gloves and hats with
scrunched up newspaper. Use an inflated balloon or a plastic jack-o’-lantern for
a head. Hang the scarecrow from a tree limb or inside from a hanging pole to
greet your Halloween guests.

A great idea to craft for trick or treaters are ghost lollipops. Simply take a
lollipop and put some white tissue paper over the pop and tie with orange and
black ribbon. Using a black magic marker make the eyes.

Hanging Ghosts
What you need: Old pillow cases; scissors; large balloons; string; markers.
What to do:
1. Blow up balloons and tie off and attach string to knot.
2. Cut a hole in one corner of the pillow case.
3. Place the balloon inside the pillowcase and move to the cut corner. Pull the
string through the hole.
4. Holding balloon in place, mark off the areas of the pillowcase where you will
cut eyes and mouth or you may just draw them on with the markers.
5. Remove the balloon and draw or cut the shapes you desire on the pillow case.
6. Place the balloons back into place, cut string to desired length and hang.
These are excellent hanging from trees on a breezy evening. You may also achieve
the same effect with sheets and bigger balloons for larger ghosts, why not make
a whole family.

Halloween: Costume Ideas (1)

Deck of Cards
For each costume you will need:
two poster boards
nylon cord for shoulder straps
markers for coloring
Simply choose which playing card your child wishes to be and draw the front on
one poster board and the back on the other. Put holes in the tops and sides for
the nylon cord straps for the shoulders and ties for the sides in case it’s
breezy. The children wear them just like sandwich boards they used to use for
walking advertisements.
This is great because the older children can pretty much make the costumes
themselves as it is mostly drawing and coloring and tying cord.

“The Cereal Killer” Is Easy & Quick
Here’s one that everyone laughs about: “The Cereal Killer” You wear a coat
(preferably trench) and attach the little cereal boxes all over with safety pins
and stick plastic knives through each box. There you have it - the cereal
killer!

A Easy to Make Popcorn Box
I went as a Box of Popcorn. I wore a large box with a cut just above my knee and
holes cut for my head and arms. I painted the box all white. Then every half
inch, I made red lines the length of box, front, sides and back. I stenciled in
red letters, on an angle, the word “popcorn” and at the top I glued popcorn to
the top, to give the effect of an overflowing box of popcorn.

Crayon Costume for Halloween
Dress in a sweat suit or body suit that’s all one color. Use a magic marker to
print the word, “crayon” in large letters down the length of your body (use
whichever color will be visible with the color of crayon you’ve decided to be).
Take an old pair of shoes (or buy a cheap pair at a thrift shop) and make them
the same color as the rest of your outfit by gluing or taping the same colored
construction paper to the tops of the shoes. Wear a pair of socks the same
color.
Use construction paper in the same color to create a pointy hat. Punch a hole in
either side of the hat and attach some similar-colored yarn in such a way that
it can be tied under your chin to secure the hat.
As the final touch, paint your face the crayon color that your chose.

Nerd Costume for Halloween

Wear a pair of pants that are a couple of inches short, a pair of suspenders,
white socks with black shoes and horn-rim glasses (put some tape on one side of
the glasses, as if the tape is the only thing holding that side of the glasses
together
